Artificial Intelligence’s Rapid Advancement: 10,000x Smarter in a Decade

Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, one of the world’s largest telecommunications and technology companies, stated today that artificial intelligence, which will be 10,000 times smarter than humans, will emerge within the next 10 years. Son’s statements suggest a future with AI far more advanced than the artificial general intelligence (AGI) that OpenAI and others are currently striving to achieve.

Artificial Intelligence's Rapid Advancement: 10,000x Smarter in a Decade

Although artificial intelligence is a main topic, it encompasses several types. While there is no strict classification, AI is generally grouped under three headings: artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), and artificial superintelligence (ASI).

Artificial narrow intelligence refers to AI types that focus on specific tasks and specialize in those areas. Today’s AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini fall into this category. On the other hand, artificial general intelligence is a theoretical type of AI capable of performing any task and specializing in all areas of human intelligence. This type of AI has not yet been developed. Lastly, artificial superintelligence represents a theoretical type of AI that surpasses human intelligence in every aspect and outperforms humans in all subjects. This level of AI is sometimes referred to as a “technological singularity.”

In light of this information, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son’s statements may seem ambitious, but they are not entirely unfounded. Son predicts that AGI, which will likely be one to ten times smarter than humans, will arrive in the next three to five years. He also states that the arrival of AGI will not significantly change people’s way of life or create a pressing need for it. However, when it comes to ASI, or artificial superintelligence, Son foresees a dramatic advancement. According to him, ASI will lead to an AI that is 10,000 times smarter than any human genius, emerging within the next 10 years. The CEO also emphasized that his goal is to make ASI a reality.
